Artist Statement
My ambition as a writer is to elicit deep thought from the reader. Think of me as a thought provoker. I write because this is my most effective form of communication. When verbal communication fails, I can always express what I need to say through writing. I have a fascination for writing about black social issues. This is due to the turbulence in my earlier life I endured.
The issues and/or ideas I mostly present in my work are social issues such as drug abuse and racism. I am also committed to writing about life issues. However, I do not limit myself to only those topics. I extend my archive into areas where I can communicate thoughts of love. I would like for the reader to interpret my work the way he or she perceives it. There is no correct way of understanding my work. I never desire to limit myself to one type of audience. However, my vision is to show blackness in many dimensions. My work reflects the trials and tribulations of many black people. This is my truth as a writer. I write for people that look like me. For me brown symbolizes blackness. It does not matter how my portfolio is viewed because all of my works align with one another. I welcome anyone who wants to gain knowledge of black experiences. Most certainly I am holding a place for those who are black and would like to see themselves mirrored into a text.
