Neglected by Father

By Deneja Atkins

First four years of my life you were absent.

Missed my cries, laughs, first words, and diaper days.

Mom fell short a few times to pay the rent.

You’re colder than the winters that foul play.

Cracking the skin we share, mahogany.

Why weren’t you there to protect me from them?

Causing me many years of agony.

One of the many men who I condemn.

Each day collecting rocks instead of gems.

Vile to women you desperately need.

A glass of cold water I will not send,

When you’re old, brittle, weak, so take heed!

You don’t get to claim me as your daughter

when you see me thriving in spring water.
